Today in Palm Beach we had a diesel fuel leak from a Nissan Patrol 3L engine. The leak was quickly diagnosed as a cracked fuel injector line. This is not a common fault with this engine. More so, a common fault with any diesel engine that has been previously worked on.
These diesel fuel injector lines are made from steel and hold high pressure. They have several mounts along the pipe to stop vibration. As vibration is a killer of these pipes. This vehicle had been previously worked on and not had the mounting brackets put back on. This allowed vibrations which eventually cracked the injector line.
The real risk with this failure was the potential of a fire as this fuel leak was near the very hot turbo charger. Luckily for the owner he noticed the leak before any further damaged occurred.
This is relatively easy to repair with the correct tools. Though it must be mentioned these high pressure fuel systems can be dangerous (especially on common rail systems, as they run much higher pressures) So we recommend only trained and qualified technicians should be carry out these repairs.
