Not what we expected to find today. This Nissan Patrol come in with a suspected clutch issue. When the pedal was depressed the clutch wouldn’t disengage properly and there was unsettling noises. We removed the gearbox to inspect the clutch. The clutch was worn but not the problem. The flywheel was moving in and out approximately 1cm. This is not meant to move at all in this direction. Only cause possible is damaged engine internals.
The engine was removed and stripped down for assessment. This is when we found the crankshaft to be completely sheared in half. Amazing to find when the engine was actually still running! Not well, but it was still running.
This has now turned into a much larger repair. A full engine rebuild. This Nissan patrol TD42 had previously been upgraded by another workshop. Larger turbo, intercooler, custom manifolds, High flow injector pump. Unfortunately these upgrades have been the cause of the broken crankshaft. These crankshafts don’t handle high horsepower well. So complete rebuild of the engine with new turbo spec crankshaft, H beam conrods, pistons, rings bearings etc.
With all diesel rebuilds the fuel system must be checked. This was sublet to a specialist who found the injector pump and injectors all out of specification. New injectors and 12mm injector pump rebuild are required.
A much bigger problem than original suspected. The broken crankshaft was a unwanted surprise. But after the repairs the vehicle is running better than ever and will be much more reliable.
